Use Cascade Temperature Control to Avoid Overshoot and Heater Burnout

Quickly heating a part that has an inherently long thermal lag time with minimum overshoot is a challenge.  You can solve this problem with cascade control, which is the use of a control algorithm in which the output of one control loop provides the setpoint for another control loop.  The second loop, in turn, determines the control action.  In this manner, one loop monitors the actual part or process, and the other PID based loop performs the actual control.  This also reduces heater burn-out caused by too much use at maximum power.

Keywords: temperature control, temperature overshoot, cascade control, closed loop temperature control.
